OUT NOW: JEB – Making A Way
With full hearts, we are proud to announce Making a Way: Lesbians Out Front, a reissue of the second groundbreaking book by the acclaimed photographer and “portal maker” JEB (Joan E. Biren). In the years following the release of her first book, 1979’s Eye to Eye: Portraits of Lesbians, JEB collaborated with poets, musicians, filmmakers, elected officials, healthcare providers, factory workers, spiritual leaders, and others who built communities and worked for political change. In Making a Way, originally published in 1987, the spirit and energy of this movement is depicted in more than a hundred emotionally resonant photographs—images that take us from passionate activism to thoughtful solitude, while remarks and remembrances from each woman photographed deepen the historical record. This reissue of Making a Way adds insightful new essays by Cheryl Clarke and JD Samson, resulting in an essential document of an enormously impactful era and a testament to the communities whose support and nourishment continues to sustain us across generations.
